About The Series 79 License

The Series 79 license is known formally as the Limited Representative - Investment Banking license and it qualifies an individual to advise on or facilitate debt or equity offerings through a private placement or public offering or to advise or facilitate mergers or acquisitions, tender offers, financial restructurings, asset sales, divestitures or other corporate reorganizations or business combination transactions.

Passing the Series 79 exam is required for applicants for entry-level jobs as investment banking representatives. Generally, Series 79 license holders are usually associates at an investment bank, investment banking analysts, or investment bankers.

Please note that in order to earn your Series 79 license, you'll need to pass the Securities Industry Essentials (SIE) examination as well as the Series 79 Top-off exam. You won't need a sponsorship to take the SIE exam but to take the Series 79 exam, you must be sponsored by a FINRA member firm or another self-regulatory organization (SRO).
