Form 706 Compliance For Estates: Challenges With Includable Property, Tax Calculations, Valuation Elections

Webinar: ID# 1015081
Recorded CD or On-Demand
About This Course:
Filing an estate tax return on federal Form 706 poses a number of challenges, starting with the simple question of whether a return is needed. That is only the beginning. For example, what estate property should be included in the return? What deductions can be taken from the gross estate?

From there, numerous Form 706 compliance challenges arise. Questions you’ll face range from more general, such as calculating federal estate tax and credits against it, to more specific, such as how to address retirement plans and valuations or how much to put into a credit shelter trust for a spouse.

In navigating the pitfalls inherent in filing Form 706 and its schedules and properly identifying estate tax elections for valuations and timing of payments, tax professionals will benefit from insights offered by experienced estate tax specialists.

Listen as our panelists offer approaches for tackling compliance decisions demanded by the federal estate tax return.

  • Overview of federal estate tax concepts
  • Determining includable property
  • Deductions and credits
  • Tax calculation
  • Valuation issues
  • Impact of state laws and death taxes, wills and trusts
  • Frequent estate tax audit red flags

The panel will review these and other key questions:
  • Under what circumstances does an estate tax return really need to be filed?
  • What property should be included in, and deductions taken from, the estate in preparing Form 706?
  • What are the rules for alternate and special-use valuations?
  • How do trusts, wills and state laws affect the federal estate tax return?
