Excel Training: Introduction To VLOOKUP

Excel’s VLOOKUP function adds automation to Excel spreadsheets in that users are freed from having to manually point to a designated cell that contains text or numbers. For instance, you might use look-up formulas to return the price for an inventory item, or use SUMIF or SUMIFS to summarize data based upon one or more criteria.

Implementing look-up functions will transform how you use Excel by allowing you to look up information such as pay rates, item prices, and accounting results, instead of manually linking to specific cells.

In this session Excel expert David Ringstrom, CPA, introduces you to the VLOOKUP function, and then goes beyond the basics with a discussion of the MATCH, CHOOSE, INDEX, SUMIF, SUMIFS, and SUMPRODUCT functions.

He then demonstrates troubleshooting techniques and shares the ins and outs of lookup functions to prepare you to deal with subtle issues that can prevent lookup functions from working properly.

By attending this training session, you will learn how to:

  • Understand VLOOKUP and its nuances and restrictions
  • Avoid the complexity of nested IF statements with Excel’s CHOOSE function
